What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Kris

I am involved with Pi Beta Pi, one of the greek sororities with the Panhellenic council at UTK. It has been a great way to get involved within the community, meet new people, and stay active in UTK's campus life.

Jaimee

A lot of our students seem to be involved with the Greek community. I joined the Greek society my sophomore year because I was an athlete my freshman year, and I believe I had a great experience with both. I lived in the dorms both my freshman and sophomore year and in some dorms they do leave their doors wide open. We would roam the halls and introduce ourselves to different girls on our floor. My sophomore year, however, it was a dorm for both boys and girls so that may be the reason we never kept our door open.

Brittney

Sororities and Fraternities are big on UTK's campus. I live on the Sorority floor in a dorm and the doors are always open because we all know each other. When i was a freshman the people in the dorms did not know each other very well. Although some of my best friends now are my random roomate from last year and my neighbors. Parties are ALWAYS going on on and off campus. There are very few weekends when options are limited. In those cases I usually just go and hang out at friends apartments. Partying gets old quick.

Parker

The most popular organizations to be part of fraternitys and sororitys as well as the Orange Nation and College Republicans/ Democrats. I love all of the groups I particpate in. In the dorms students leave there doors locked at almost all times. Athletic events are hugely popular as well as big name guest speakers such as Bob Woodward. Theater is not that popular. THe dating scene is fun, you can almost always meet somebody cool on the strip. I met my closest friends through my fraternity. If I'm awake at 2 AM on a tuesday I am studying. Every year the the biggest events are football games, homecoming, all sing, and carnicus. People party every friday and saturday night for sure. Also sometimes people participate in social events such as Tuesday Night Throwdowns, Whiskey Wendsdays, and Thirsty Thursdays. The greek scene is very important almost every major party is organized by a fraternity. Last weekend I went to bar both nights. If I'm not drinking on a saturday night I'm sick.

Laura

Greek life is huge on campus. I'm in Pi Beta Phi, a sorority on campus. I love it! In most dorms, students don't leave the doors open, maybe unlocked though. Athletic events are key! My closest friends I met in my sorority, but some of them are old friends from back in the day at home. If I was awake at 2 AM on a Tuesday, I'd be studying! At UT, Greeks are important; they hold a lot of offices and are really involved. Thus, they have a lot of say in what goes on around campus. Weekends are full of partying and good times. I love eating off-campus and shopping!

Kyle

Greek Life is pretty popular on campus, and athletic events make Ut.

Tyler

Football games are amazing. People party every night. If i'm not drinking on a saturday night I'm either sick or in jail.

katy

If i am awake on at 2am on a tuesday night I am either writing a paper or at a party/mixer. Many people involved in the greek chapters party on week nights becuase that is when the mixers and date parties are, and there is always one going on. Many people just like to go to the library and talk or do whatever at 2am. some people sleep all day and do homeowrk all night. But 2am on a tuesday night is prime time for most people on campus.

Mallory

Sororities and fraternities are important because they sponsor alot of on campus social events and contain most of the SGA candidates. They're not everything though.

tori

I am a member of the Greek community on campus. As such I have a lot of experience with many different kinds of people. I feel that this interaction will help me in the future.

christy

I am involved in Pi Beta Phi Sorority..I personally do not leave my dorm door open..Sports events are very popular on campus..I met my closest friend in high school and we have gotten closer since i have been in school.. I think that black and white fraterenities/sororites should come together more and learn more about each other so there isnt separation between the two..I went home...When I go off campus I usually go hang out with friends at their apartment or go to the mall..

Katelin

The social scene is awesome. People are chill and know how to be smart about partying.

Alicia

My weekend definitely illustrates the thriving social life that can be found on UT campus. Friday after class I hung out with my "family" in my sorority - that is my Big Sis, my Little Sis, and my Grand-Little. We got ice cream and just talked about our lives. It was realy fun. Then Saturday my best friend and sorority sister threw a huge cabin party up in Gatlinburg. I went with my boyfriend. At first everyone just kind of hung out drinking (except for me and my best friend who are non-drinkers...yes, a non-drinker threw a cabin party) then when everyone had a pretty good buzz going people started to split off and I spent most of my time just talking to my boyfriend. When he decided to play drinking games my best friend and I just hung out laughing at all of our drunk friends. My boyfriend and I stuck around the next day and hung out with my best friend and her boyfriend. We ate, hung out at the cabin, and went with them to buy new puppies.

Jill

I'm involved in Pi Beta Phi and the intermurals. It has been a really good experience so far. I have met a lot of new people and i can truly say that it has helped me find what I want to do for the rest of my life!

Sara

There is plenty available at UTK for the party scene. The strip is a great place to go out with friends and there is plenty to do right around campus that does not even require a car. This keeps the social scene safer. There seems to be a good balance between greeks and non greeks on campus.

Megan

The greek community seems very influential on campus. Football and basketball is a big part of campus as well. I met my closest friends through my sorority. If i was awake at two am on a tuesday i am probably in the commons working on homework and visiting with other friends who just cannot sleep due to procrastination on an assignment.

Jenny

Sports are very popular on the UTK campus. A lot of the social calendar is made around whichever sport is in season. Greek life is also present on our campus. While much less than half the student body is Greek their presence is well known on campus. The majority of offices held on student boards are Greeks.

Lindsey

We are a party school. It is as simple as that. We live by the motto: "The wettest dry campus in the nation." About 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body is involved in a Greek organization. Of that 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} we hold almost 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the leadership positions on campus. We are a community that supports each other and has improved not only the campus, but the Knoxville area.

Audrey

the Greek system here is very big, but it doesn't encompass the entire campus, there are many other clubs like the outdoor adventures club and things like that

Lauren

College is what you make of it. If you want to party every night of the week, well you can. The strip is full of bars that are walking distance and no cover, the old city has a great night scene that is a little classier than the college bar, and there’s always some sort of Greek event taking place. But if that’s not your thing there are so many events that go on at UTK to take advantage of that do not involve partying and drinking. There are rec-teams through the T-rec for almost any sport you want, speakers on pretty much a weekly basis, and more clubs than I could even imagine. The town of Knoxville is also a great place to be in comparison to many college towns because it’s also a pretty big city. You can find almost anything you want in Knoxville from shopping to food, it’s a great place to be!

Steph

Greek life is huge at UT. Basketball and football games are a big deal and most students follow those sports. People go out and party every night of the week but thursday, friday, and saturday nights are the main party nights.

Jennifer

Sororities and Fraternities are pretty big on campus (something like 35{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus is Greek); however, that doesn't mean you HAVE to be in one, because plenty of people aren't. There's always something going, whether it's a cookout in Presidential Courtyard or a party on the strip.

Laura

I think it is a great idea to have intermural sports so it gives everyone a chance to play or do something they love. It is a great opportunity to meet friends as well. People party every night, but that doesn't mean you have to. There are always going to be people who get drunk every night. You can still have fun without drinking. You can go see a movie, or go on a date, or even go to parties that have alcohol, you just don't have to drink any of it.

Ali

What did I do last weekend? We are very fortunate to have plenty of restaurants that have built up around the campus. Knoxville is a city built around the university, rather than a university placed in the middle of a city. We are also very fortunate to have plenty of movie theaters around as well. I went out to eat with a couple of my sorority sisters to Calhoun's on the River... which is the in the top three restaurants you must go to if you're ever in Knoxville. I later went to the movies with my boyfriend... and my friends went to see the same movie earlier. So later on when we all met up at a party we could discuss it. Plenty of the people were drinking, but a few of us weren't, and there was no pressure to drink, and there never is. People are nice to you and welcoming no matter what your situation and beliefs. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Emmerson

The greek like if strong on campus, but you do not have to be greek to partake in social events and make a statement. Intramurals are very popular. There are man political groups that get together to inform the student body and also have protests. The are hundreds of volunteer organizations to get involved with as well. Basically, there is something to do at all hours of the day in just about any activity you could want.

Katie

Parties are usually Thursday or friday/Saturday nights. At a party that does not involve drinking you can mingle, watch movies, meet people who are close to what you like, really anything you can think of. Plus there is not alot of pressure to drink at UTK.

Meg

We have guest speakers in my social work classes, people in my dorms leave their doors open.

Hannah

Greeks are a minority on our campus so the social life varies with each student. Different people are partying every night.

Zoe

Sororitys and Fraternity s are very popular on campus. My residence hall is extreamley unfriendly however, I feel as though no one on my floor knows anyone else living there.

Emily

Orange Nation and Greek life are very popular organizations around campus. Most of the time dorm room doors are closed, its not the safest environment. Athletic events are VERY popular. especially since it is free to go to the events which is a HUGE help. It definately encourages student involvement in athletics.

Liz

Sororities-15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body but greek life controls a lot

Ashley

Greek life is big on campus. However, those who are not Greek usually perceive those that are as stuck-up and into partying more than anything else. I do not believe that these assumptions are always true.

Jason

I believe that Greek life is a great system that incoming freshman need to join. Only because of the Social life that you get makes you break out of your shell and meet people. This also leads you to gain leadership skills

Harper

The Greek life at UTK represents about 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body.

Adam

Greek life is big at UT. I am involved in Pi Kappa Phi, when I lived in the dorms the doors were not really left open much. Athletic events are very popular. Dating scene is fine but I can't find a girlfriend for some reason. People party alot in the fall because of football season but not much really happens in the spring. On a saturday night you can not drink and go to a movie.

Alex

Athletic events like football and basketball games are very popular here.

Adam

We do it big.

Harper

Activities are always going on on campus. night time on campus brings events from different clubs on campus and then of course there are bars off campus. Greek life is small but influential. Greeks tend to be more involved in groups such as SGA simply because the rest of the student body is apathetic about it. The Clarence Brown theater on campus is professionally put on by hired outside actors which is good for acting students trying to gain experience. Essentially, this school is a party school so when weekends come around, partying is what 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students are doing

Chad

Athletic events are huge, everyone on campus goes out and hangs out with their friends to watch and pre-game for sporting events. Fraternities and Sororities play a huge role in social networking, I don't have many friends that are not in my fraternity.

Jody

There of course is the old standards of parties on the weekend, going to the bars, whatever. But there is also a lot involved on campus as well.

Katie

I am lucky enough to have lived in a dormitory that had community bath. In saying that I mean, all of the girls on my hall kept their doors open. We were a huge group of friends and none of us had the same agenda. I am in Pi Beta Phi, my roommate ROTC, one girl across the hall was on the rowing team, the other was a Zeta, down the hall we had a dancer, a Freshman Council member, and girls that were just there hanging out with us and our stress. Sure people party whenever they feel it necessary, but by no means do you have to party to have fun at UT. I can remember countless nights where my friends and I would sit in the hallway and just discuss life until 3 or 4 in the morning. Off campus there are lots of neat places to go--parks, movie theaters, the mall, etc.

Rachel

It seems that Greek life, Church life, and Athletics are most dominant. I'm in a sorority. I live on a sorority floor and we leave our door open. Athletics are VERY popular, of course. The dating scene is pretty easy. There's always someone around who you'll find attractive. I met my closest friends through living on the sorority floor.

Kathryn

The football and basketball teams are the most popular here at UTK, especially because our teams are so good nationally. Almost every UTK student can say they have been to an athletic event. They are one of UTK's best qualities. We also have very interesting theatrical performances that are advertised around campus. Partying on the weekends is a hobby as well. The bars on the strip are always packed on the weekends.

Emily

Most popular are sororities and fraternities. Students in dorms do not leave their door open, unless in a sorority dorm. Athletic events are huge! The dating scene-college boys don't want to date. I met my closest friends through my sorority, and if I'm awake at 2am on Tuesday then I'm goofing off with them. People tend to party a lot. I believe fraternities and sororities are very important because it's an automatic way to meet people similar to you, and they open doors to new opportunities.

Lauren

Sororitys and frats are most popular then football and basketball.I am involved with Delta Zeta. No students never leave there door open. The football and basketball games are most popular.i meet my closest friends from my sorority. If i am awake at 2 a.m i am with my friends goofing off.Booms day is what comes to my head that happens every year.People party every night. I went out last friday and saturday i went bowling. I shop off campus.

Ashley

UT is known for it's thriving spirit in all it's endeavors, especially football! There is nothing in the world like the UT campus on a game day. UT also has one of the best student activities on college campuses: Volapalooza. Every year, on the last day of spring semester classes, the Campus Entertainment Board puts on a concert completely free to students with a big name musical act.

Katherine

I would say the most popular thing to do right at the beginning of the school year is be in a frat or a sorority. Then as football comes along, its cool to know about football, and then basketball, then baseball. Its all about the season. I'm involved in a sorority. I use to the OVER active in it, but now that I am a senior I have stepped down. I never left my door open because I didn't know anyone in my suite, but friends always left theirs open. Athletic events are POPULAR. If you want to find a date, you probably can, if you want to be single you can. I met my closest friends through my sorority and through my boyfriend. Seeing how its Tuesday now, if I am up at 2am its probably because I can't sleep... but I would say you're probably studying because its Tuesday and there is nothing else to do on a Tuesday. Torch Night happens each year, along with homecoming events. People party every night. Even though I am in a sorority after four years I don't really see an importance, like I"m not going to push my kids to do one if they don't want to. Yes my friends I have are close to me because of my sorority, but after putting so much time and effort into it and so far as a senior I've got nothing but "senior privileges" out of it I don't really see the importance. But it will return the favor one day. Its all what you put into it. Last weekend I went to the bars and had some drinks with some friends. You can do ANYTHING you want to do especially in Knoxville on a Saturday night. If you want to drink, drink. Shop, shop. Play laser tag, movies anything, do it. There are so many opportunities. I use to recruit for the football team so I could give a list.... Off campus you can shop, go to the movies, go to a park, EAT, laser tag, chuckie cheese, go to Gatlinburg.

Kayte

I think greek life is a very popular group on campus even though UTK has a relatively low percentile of greeks. I am involved in a sorority and I would not have done it any other way. I met all of my roommates in my sorority and I also met a lot of my closest friends in the dorms freshmen year. Whether or not doors are left open in dorms varies from case to case. I think the dating scene is what you choose to make of it. If I am awake at 2 am on a Tuesday night I am either studying, horsing around with my roommates or watching a movie! Last weekend I went out and then went to a movie with my girlfriends.

Katie

SGA, fraternities/sororities, Intramurals I am involved with SPJ. When I lived in the dorm, we locked our door. The athletic events are very popular. Guest speakers are popular to certain groups. Theater- I wouldn't know. The dating scene is fueled by alcohol usually. I am related to my closest friends. I am never awake at 2 am. Traditions- homecoming People party a lot- every Thursday, Friday, Saturday Very important at UTK I shopped last weekend and saw a movie You can go out to eat, go bowling, go to the movies Go shopping, go to the movies, go to a nice restaurant

Katie

Greek is big on campus, as well as some smaller clubs like SGA and ACE. Athletic events are the huge things to do on weekends.
