Describe the students at your school.

Career choice is the number one concern so many of them will turn you in for breaking the rules if it means them being viewed in a more positive light by their superiors. You really have to learn early on who you can and cant trust.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Before making the decision to attend a certain college make sure you talk with someone who has already attended that college. The next four years of your life will be affected by your decision. Try to figure out what you want to study or at least what kind of job you want to go into before choosing your school. Decide what is more important to you; academic success or social activity. Balance your work time and you play time and don't get too caught up in either one. Social development in my opinion is just as important as academic development when leading other people. You must learn how to deal with others.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

We all have 100% job security and only 10% of the applicants are accepted. It is a good place to go if you want to focus completely on academics and do not care about having a social life.

I don't need this scholarship. I just did the survey to help prospective students decide if the US Naval Academy was right for them.

What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about my school is that you pay for your own education by serving your country after graduation. Although tuition and all living expenses are completely paid by the government, students (called midshipmen) owe 5 years of service as an Officer in the Navy or Marine Corps. What this means is that every graduate is guaranteed a job either on a Navy ship, flying aircraft, serving as a Marine, or as a Navy SEAL.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Any person who is irresponsible, the casual drug user, and people who aren't willing to work hard for a goal should not attend this school. Students who buck authority, or cannot work together with others should avoid this intitution like the plague; you cannot make it throug the United States Naval Academy alone. Academics are rigorous, and a strong focus is placed on physical development in order to provide dedicated, hard-working Navy and Marine Corps Officers. Those willing to work hard and apply themselves can succeed and provide themselves a good start in life.

Go see as many schools as you can and talk to as many people as you can. You can never have enough information about a school.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

During the first year you are not allowed to watch movies or listen to music.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Not being able to go out into town during the week.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

On top of academics, we learn to be leaders right off the bat.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Start early. Start asking questions at age 10, even 8. Life long learning and achievement begins with curiousity and knowing what you would want to be--whatever and however many they are.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

The speed of light was discovered at the Naval Academy. Our engineering and science departments are cutting edge, and on top of that, we teach our midshipmen leadership. It is very well rounded, and it sits right at downtown Annapolis (DTA).

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Choose a school that focuses on what you are most interested in doing after college, but also one that allows for other options if you change your mind. If you do not know what you want to do after college, choose one with a move balanced curriculum that exposes you to your different choices.

What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about the Naval Academy is the tradition. The Academy has a tradition of excellence and expectations. This makes the environment and attitude accomodating to success.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Anything bad about the Naval Academy is all a matter of ones attitude. The worst thing is the cynicism that evolves as students spend more and more time inside the walls of the Yard. Good friends and a good attitude can help to overcome this though.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

There is a mad rush to get everything done the "right" way. Hurry with the application process and get everything turned in on time, but take the time to visit different kinds of colleges prior to submitting applications: large, small, greek-life driven, etc...; however, remember that all the research in the world is just research - you're personal integration and experience with the college will come with time. Don't get to wound-up about the process because it's going to work out and if you chose the right place, you'll have a good time. The right place is the student's decision and ease in deliberation is a factor of how much time was spent in research. I chose on a whim, at the last moment, for a whole slew of reasons, but that doesn't mean that my decision was rushed or uninformed. Maybe you'll get this gut feeling and remember that when you do, run with it.

What's unique about your campus?

I think that the incredible importance put on selflessness is the most important aspect of my school. It has become socially acceptable to become self-absorbed, but I think that wholeheartedly devoting oneself to a larger cause is more commendable, especially if that cause is the defense of the nation. A lot of the time, I get reality checks during the academic year; I'll realize that my grades are important, but that, somtimes, mentoring my freshmen takes precedence over studying. I have to succeed, but I cannot do it alone.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

A person who does not wish to be put in harms way for their country should not come to the Academy. It's important to be empathetic and to be able to act on those feelings. It's a misconception that military officers should be unemotional - an unemotional person will not make it at the Academy or in the Fleet. Pride is great to a certain degree, but don't let pride overshadow humility.
