Proceedings, the flagship magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute, aims to stimulate, illuminate, provoke, and, when appropriate, entertain. The magazine is not an organ of the Navy, the Marine Corps, or any other organization or institution, public or private. It is supportive, however, of the Sea Services and their mission. The General Prize Essay contest is perhaps the oldest continuously conducted writing contest in the entire United States. The Institute began work on the Contest in 1878 under the leadership of the most recognized and celebrated Naval Strategist in United States history, Alfred Thayer Mahan, then the Chairman of the Naval Institute. Prizewinners are brought to Annapolis (Washington, D.C.) in October of each year for a special presentation at the annual invitation-only Naval Institute Honors Night, celebrating the birthday of the Institute and all those who have contributed to our Mission during the year.
This essay contest is open to all work published in Proceedings, the flagship magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute. Please see the USNI website for guidelines on submissions. The contest remains open ... sign up for full scholarship deadline information.
