Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies, approximately five awards offered annually based on the amount of available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be enrolled in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program of study that includes coursework related to an understanding of or interest in technological fields supporting aerospace. This can include associate's degree programs in advanced technology fields such as, but not limited to, engineering, computers, electronics and industrial technology.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must be currently attending a Virginia community college.
  6. Must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours).
  7. Must be a college freshmen and have completed at least one semester of coursework (minimum of 12 credit hours) at time of application.

Description: This award is available to Virginia students who are currently enrolled at a Virginia community college as a freshmen student. The student must major in any program of study that includes coursework related to an understanding of or interest in technological fields supporting aerospace and must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is a coalition of five Virginia colleges and universities, NASA, state educational agencies, Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology, and other institutions representing diverse aerospace education and research. The VSGC acts as an umbrella organization, coordinating and developing aerospace-related and high technology educational and research efforts throughout the Commonwealth and connecting Virginia's effort to a national community of shared aerospace interests. The VSGC Community College Scholarship program is a competitive scholarship program, funded by NASA and the Commonwealth of Virginia, recognizing high academic achievement and promise. The goal of the program is to encourage talented individuals to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at Virginia community colleges. Award selections are determined by a committee of VSGC representatives. Awardees will be required to provide a photo and biographical information upon selection, inform the Consortium of changes of address, respond to academic and employment follow-up surveys for Space Grant Community College Scholars, and may also be asked to discuss their studies in public forums. At the completion of the award period, awardees must submit a brief written report on their experience as a Virginia Space Grant Community College STEM Scholar.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) agency website. Students must apply during their freshman year of community college enrollment for an award that will begin in the sophomore year. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit a statement of academic goals and plan of study, a resume of education, significant accomplishments (e.g. honors or fellowships), and any other relevant information, and transcripts for all institutions attended. The student must upload his/her transcript as a PDF document within the application. Links to free PDF conversion services will be provided if the student does not have access to a PDF document of his/her transcripts. The student must also provide the names and contact information for two references, one of which must be the student's faculty adviser. Letters of recommendation should address the student's technical and/or academic potential in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field or in pursuing advanced academic study in a STEM or aerospace-related track. VSGC will contact both references via email to request a letter of recommendation on behalf of the student. The application and all required materials must be submitted online and received by 11:59 p.m. EST on the deadline date. VSGC must receive both recommendations for the application to be complete.
