Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two to five awards offered annually. Last year, three awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a parent who was killed or permanently disabled in a work zone, including mobile operations and the installation of roadway safety features.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

Additional Information: The American Traffic Safety Services Foundation Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for post-high school education to the children of roadway workers killed or permanently disabled in work zones, including mobile operations and the installation of roadway safety features. Each application will be judged by the following criteria: the applicant's past academic performance record of high school grades (for an applicant already attending an institution of higher learning, his/her cumulative college grade point average and academic performance will be considered); the applicant's written statement that explains his/her reasons for wanting to continue his/her education; the applicant's demonstrated need for financial assistance for continuing education, based on a completed FAFSA; and the views expressed in letters of recommendation that are provided in support of the applicant's nomination.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. If a particular applicant demonstrates a strong commitment to volunteerism, he/she may be eligible to receive an additional $1,000 per award in honor of Chuck Bailey, an esteemed member of the roadway safety industry, who passed away in June 2002.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit an official school transcript, a completed and signed FAFSA form, a typed essay of 200 words or less addressing the topic listed on the application, and two letters of recommendation, including volunteer activities (if applicable). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Recommendation letters may be from a teacher, school administrator, counselor, member of the clergy, or work or military supervisor who can address the applicant's qualifications and academic aptitude. Letters of recommendation from the applicant's immediate family members, close family friends, blood relatives, or relatives by marriage will not be accepted. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date.
