Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a resident of Kent, Allegan, Ionia, Ottawa, Montcalm, or Muskegon Counties in Michigan.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program.
  4. Must be a non-traditional student, returning to education after at least two years of absence.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Additional Information: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation awards hundreds of scholarships annually, primarily to Kent County students bound for or in college, or those pursuing a technical career. This scholarship is funded annually by Altrusa International of Grand Rapids, and seeks to encourage higher education among those local area residents who wish to return to school after at least two years of absence from education. By supporting non-traditional education, Altrusa hopes to increase leadership and unlock the potential of the local community.

Award Amount: Awards range from $500 to $5,000 depending on the student's unmet need and the availability of funds.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications and information are available at the Grand Rapids Community Foundation website at the address provided. In addition to the online application form, an interest student must submit transcripts (official or unofficial), an essay describing his/her personal and professional aspirations, and documentation such as the FAFSA Student Aid report that proves financial need. To apply for the Altrusa International of Grand Rapids Scholarship, the applicant must also submit two letters of recommendation. All applications must be submitted online by the deadline date.
