Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be enrolled as a college junior or senior in the upcoming fall term. Scholarships may be awarded only to those students who will employ them to continue their formal undergraduate education at a recognized educational institution.
  4. Must be enrolled in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program and have a passion for bridges.
  5. Must be a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in good standing at time of application and award.

Additional Information: Through the generosity of the employees of Figg Engineering Group, a scholarship fund was established in 2002 as a memorial to Eugene C. Figg, Jr., F.ASCE, winner of the ASCE 2002 OPAL Award for Design. Gene Figg dedicated his career, his company, and his life to creating "bridges as art". Students may apply for all ASCE scholarships for which they are qualified. All applications will be reviewed by the Society Awards Committee or its designee. Copies of all applications will be shared with the Figg Engineering Group upon request. The committee may recommend no award be made in a particular year if no meritorious applications are received. Selection is based on appraisal of the applicant's award justification, stated interest in bridge design and construction, educational plan, academic performance and standing, development potential, leadership capacity, and financial need. The Society Awards Committee shall submit its recommendation to the Executive Committee of the ASCE Board of Direction for final approval. The recipient will be notified of selection in May by the Executive Director of ASCE.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable. The recipient will also be eligible to interview for an internship opportunity with the Figg Engineering Group. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition, fees and related expenses, and will be disbursed in the fall term. Previous holders of these scholarships are eligible to apply in any succeeding competition for these awards provided the other requirements of eligibility are satisfied.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a personal statement of 1,000 to 1,500 words addressing why the award should be given to him/her, his/her interest in bridge design or construction, and plans for continuing formal education; a brief financial plan outlining how he/she will finance his/her education if the award is granted; a detailed annual budget; two or more sealed letters of recommendation from faculty members; one sealed official transcript from each school attended (enclosed or sent directly by registrar's office); a one-page resume including honors, activities, organizations, ASCE activities (including any offices held), and any work experience; and any additional information/documentation that would support his/her interest in bridges. All application materials should be mailed in one packet to the address provided. All materials must be received by the deadline date.
