Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a female.
  2. Must be 17 years of age or older.
  3. Must be a mother, with minor children.
  4. Must be enrolled in a skills training, ESL, or GED program; or pursuing a technical/vocational degree, an associate's degree, a first bachelor's degree, or a professional/master's/doctoral degree.
  5. Must be of low-income with an annual family income less than $17,500 for a family of 2; $22,000 for a family of 3; $26,500 for a family of 4.
  6. This award is for U.S. students.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Additional Information: Patsy Takemoto Mink (1927-2002) served in the US Congress from 1965-1976 and again from 1990-2002, where she represented Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District. The first woman of color elected to the US House of Representatives, she worked tirelessly for civil rights, women's rights, economic justice, civil liberties, peace, and the integrity of the democratic process. Established in 2003, the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation aims to carry on some of Congresswoman Mink's most ardent commitments: educational access, support, and opportunity for low-income women, especially mothers; and educational enrichment for children. Awardees will be notified by phone or email in October. Shortly after recipient notification, the list of awardees will be posted on the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation website. Please note: The foundation will only contact awardees. The foundation is not able to contact each applicant about the status of her application.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Applications can be found on the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation website. In addition to a completed application, students must also submit the following: a copy of her most recent transcript; proof of admission to school; proof of school tuition; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report); and one letter of recommendation or character reference. The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, and at college financial aid offices. All application materials must be postmarked or submitted online by the deadline. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered.
