Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Must be enrolled or plan to enroll on a full-time basis.
  4. Must be majoring in or plan to major in engineering, metallurgy, or materials science and plan to pursue a career in the iron and steel industry.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. undergraduate students who are majoring in or planning to major in engineering, metallurgy, or materials science with plans to have a career in the iron and steel industry. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship was established in 2005 by the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) to commemorate the life and industry service of William E. Schwabe, a pioneer in the application of electrical engineering technology to the advancement and refinement of electric arc furnace steelmaking. AIST Foundation Scholarship awards are intended to attract talented and dedicated students and to encourage them to pursue careers within the iron and steel industry. The AIST Foundation Board of Trustees administers the scholarships. Please note: Students do not have to be AIST members or be dependents of AIST members to apply for this award. Scholarship winners will be announced on June 30.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year. Scholarship recipients will also receive a one-year Material Advantage membership. Through the Material Advantage program, students are members of the following organizations serving the materials science and engineering community: American Ceramic Society (ACerS), Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST), ASM International, and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS).  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available online from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a current resume with work experience and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions; an essay of two pages or less addressing his/her professional goals, and explaining why he/she is interested in a career in the steel industry and how his/her skills could be applied to enhance the industry; three letters of recommendation which address academic status, leadership potential, and career commitment (one each from his/her high school counselor or college academic adviser, a professor or high school teacher, and an external source, preferably a previous employer); and a current academic transcript. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online and must be received by the deadline date.
