Number of Awards & Eligibility: Seven awards offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S citizen.
  2. Must be an NAACP member.
  3. Must not have reached the age of 25 by the application deadline.
  4. Must be currently enrolled in or accepted by an accredited college or university in the United States.
  5. Must be graduating High School Seniors or Undergraduate Students.
  6. Must possess a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (C+) on a 4.0 system.

Description: The NAACP James Weldon Johnson scholarship was set up by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. to honor its namesake with up to seven awards ranging from $1,500 or $3,000 per student.

Additional Information: James Weldon Johnson Scholarship aka the NAACP James Weldon Johnson scholarship was set up by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, in 2020 to honor James Weldon Johnson. James was a member of the fraternity during his academic studies, at Clark Atlanta University. He became active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (the NAACP) in 1917, and served as the Association’s Executive Director from 1920 – 1930. In 1899 he achieved his first literary success by writing the poem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” which was set to music and unofficially became known as the “Negro National Anthem”. This was followed by The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and God’s Trombones. James Weldon Johnson, who died June 26, 1938, was a civil rights activist, a leader of the NAACP, a poet, educator, lawyer and journalist, and was a leading figure in the creation and development of the Harlem Renaissance.

Award Amount: Up to $3,000 awards offered.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $21,000.
