Number of Awards & Eligibility: Nine awards offered annually. There will be four Editor's Choice winners (one per quarter), four Best of Issue winners (one per quarter), and one award given to the best poem for the year (announced in August). Students may win multiple awards.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must reside in the United States.
  3. Must be a current high school student. The student's eligibility ends on May 31 of his/her senior year.

Description: U.S. high school students are eligible to enter this poetry contest. Students must submit a poem of 20 lines or less on a topic of their choice.

Application requirements for the National High School Poetry Contest are:

Additional Information: All winning poems will be published. In order to protect entrants' work, all publications will be copyrighted as an anthology by LPS Publishing and/or The Live Poets Society. However, LPS Publishing and The Live Poets Society will retain no ownership rights to the poetry. Such rights remain with the poet at all times. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, imagery, artistic quality, and mastery of poetic expression. There are no theme or style requirements.

Award Amount: Awards are given as follows: $100 to Editor's Choice winners; $500 to Best of Issue winners; and $500 to the poet of the year winner. All awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $322.

Entry information is available on the contest website by clicking on the "To Enter" link at the top of the page. To enter this contest, the student must submit a poem of 20 lines or less (title and spaces between stanzas not counted). Poems must be unpublished, the sole work of the entrant, and not be entered in any other concurrent contest. Only poems written in the English language can be judged. Foreign phrases are acceptable only with a translation provided. Only one poem per student may be entered during any 90 day span. Entries are accepted by mail or email using the contact information provided. Entries must include the student's name, full mailing address, name of school, graduating year, and name of his/her English or writing teacher. Entries are accepted throughout the year for possible publication in "Just Poetry" magazine's four annual issues. Estimated deadlines for each issue are as follows: June 30, fall; Sept. 30, winter; Dec. 31, spring; Mar. 31, summer.
