Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must intend to enroll in a two- or four-year engineering or science program at an ABET-accredited college or university. A list of accredited programs is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must be a graduating high school senior at time of application.
  6. Must be the child or grandchild of a current SAE Detroit Section member.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: A U.S. student who is a high school senior planning to enroll at a two- or four-year engineering or science program at an ABET-accredited institution, and is the child or grandchild of a current SAE Detroit Section member, is eligible for this award. An eligible applicant must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and demonstrated financial need.

Application requirements for the SAE Detroit Section Technical Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. All students will be notified by the end of June. Recipient names will be listed on the SAE website by the end of July.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, renewable for three additional years if the student maintains a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and remains in good standing at his/her college or university. The student must also submit a renewal form each year by June 30. A student who completed a two-year program may continue for an additional consecutive two years at a second school offering a complete engineering or science degree.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications are available online from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Detroit Section website. As part of the application, the student must answer an essay question in 250 to 300 words, explaining his/her goals, plans, experiences, and interests for his/her career. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: an official high school transcript with SAT/ACT scores; one or more letters of recommendation from a non-family member (teacher, coach, pastor, etc.); and a copy of his/her FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) that includes the cover page and EFC metric. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and at high school guidance offices. Applications must be postmarked or emailed by the deadline date.
