Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled in a dentistry program.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university full time (12 credits per semester for undergraduate students; 9 credits per semester for graduate students).
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a high school graduate or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students who have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher. Students must be enrolled in a school of dentistry, dental hygiene or dental assisting.

Additional Information: This scholarship fund commemorates the life of Dr. John H. Dawe, who, with loyalty and dedication, served the Hawai'i Dental Association and the Honolulu County Dental Society during most of his professional life. All applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $18,000.

Online application forms are now available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the Hawai'i Community Foundation's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed online; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. For this scholarship, the student must also submit two letters of recommendation. These letters should be written by a teacher, counselor, minister, and/or employer who can comment on the student's overall character, achievement, and promise. The letters must be current (dated after April 1), contain the student's full name, and be signed by the recommender. Letters from parents, friends and relatives will not be accepted. The student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
