Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six Astrid G. Cates scholarships offered annually. Two Myrtle Beinhauer scholarships offered annually. There will be one scholarship given per Sons of Norway Districts 1-6. The two most qualified of all candidates will be awarded the Myrtle Beinhauer Scholarships.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a current member of Sons of Norway OR the child or grandchild of a current Sons of Norway member in Districts 1-6. Please note: The Sons of Norway membership must be in effect at least one calendar year prior to application.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must have a certificate of completion from high school and be enrolled in postsecondary training, vocational/trade school, or college.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. undergraduate students who are members of the Sons of Norway OR are children or grandchildren of current Sons of Norway members in Districts 1-6. The Sons of Norway membership must be in effect at least one calendar year prior to application.

Additional Information: Astrid G. Cates and Myrtle Beinhauer remembered Sons of Norway youth with a special bequest in their wills to the Sons of Norway Foundation. The Sons of Norway Foundation established the Astrid G. Cates Scholarship Fund in 1984, and the Myrtle Beinhauer Scholarship became effective in 1998. Donations by members and lodges continue to fund these scholarships. Award decisions are based upon the following criteria: application components (essay, letters of recommendation); academic potential/grade transcripts; Sons of Norway participation; involvement in volunteer, school, and community activities; and financial need. Final selection of the scholarship winners will be made by a scholarship committee appointed by the President of the Sons of Norway Foundation. Notification of the award will be made within 10 weeks of the deadline.

Award Amount: Each Astrid G. Cates Scholarship is worth $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Each Myrtle Beinhauer Scholarship is worth $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply, and may receive up to two scholarships within a five-year period.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in January for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications will be available online from the Sons of Norway Foundation website. Each student must provide an essay of 500 words or less in the online application summarizing how this scholarship will help him/her achieve his/her educational dreams and further his/her career goals and how he/she will share this experience with the Sons of Norway or community-wide audiences. If the student is using this scholarship for a vocational training program, he/she should also state how this will help advance him/her in his/her particular field or add to his/her list of skills. Each student must also provide contact information for two people who will submit letters of recommendation on his/her behalf. If the student is using this scholarship for a vocational training program, one of the letters must be from his/her employer. The letters of recommendation must be submitted via email to [email protected]; the student's name and scholarship for which he/she is applying must appear in the subject line. Each student must also submit an official copy of his/her latest high school or college transcript. All application components must be submitted by the deadline date.
