Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen, legal U.S. resident or a Canadian citizen.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  4. Must be a child or legally adopted child of a IAFF-member fire fighter killed in the line of duty.
  5. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This award is available for U.S. and international students who have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Students must be the biological or legally adopted child of an International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF)-member fire fighter killed in the line of duty.

Additional Information: The purpose of the W.H. 'Howie' McClennan Scholarship is to provide financial assistance for sons, daughters or legally adopted children of fire fighters killed in the line of duty who are planning to attend an accredited college, university, or other institution of higher learning. Awards are based on financial need, aptitude, promise and demonstrated academic achievement. The primary selection criteria for this scholarship is the need for financial assistance by the applicant.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, renewable up to three years if the recipient maintains a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and is approved for a renewal.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications are available online on the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: an official copy of a school transcript (the official school transcript should list all grade points earned and academic coursework completed to date); a brief statement (about 200 words) that indicates the applicant's reasons for wanting to continue his/her education; and two letters of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator, counselor, clergy member, work supervisor or military supervisor (active, reserve or National Guard) who can address the qualifications and academic aptitude of the applicant. The required letters of recommendation may not be from immediate family members, close family friends, blood relatives, or relationships by marriage. All applications and supporting materials must be mailed to the address provided and postmarked by the deadline.
