Number of Awards & Eligibility: One scholarship award offered annually; two non-scholarship awards will also be offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. resident.
  3. Must be a full-time high school senior.
  4. Must volunteer with animals.

Application requirements for the Scholars Helping Collars P.L.A.Y. Scholarship are:

  • Essay
  • Photos (2-3)
Additional Information: P.L.A.Y. will select the winner based on the best essay as determined by its internal panel of judges. Selection criteria will include, but is not limited to: compelling and engaging description of volunteer efforts and their impact on the personal life of the student; thematic consistency throughout the submission around the central thesis; and proper spelling and grammar usage throughout the submission. P.L.A.Y. will select the winner during the month of March and will announce the winner by March 31, 2018, on the website pending notification of the student and his/her family. Immediate family members of P.L.A.Y. employees are excluded from this contest.

Award Amount: Prizes: 1st Prize - One Scholarship valued at $1,500 2nd Prize - $300 and one set of Warm Bellies Special Edition Chill Pads (10 beds) to be donated to an animal shelter of your choice* 3rd Prize - $200 and one Garden Fresh plush toy set (5 toys) to be donated to the animal shelter of your choice*  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Application information is available online on the Pet Lifestyle and You (P.L.A.Y.) website. To apply, the student must submit an essay of 500 to 1,000 words describing his/her volunteer efforts to help animals in need and how that involvement has changed his/her life or shaped his/her perceptions on the importance of animal welfare. The essay must be submitted via email to the address provided as a Word document attachment. The file name should be the student's full name, state, and date of birth (e.g., Chipper-Jones-GA-4-24-1972). The student must also include two to three photos of his/her volunteer efforts with animals. All submission emails must contain the student's full name, date of birth, email address, postal address, high school he/she is currently enrolled in, and a phone number to contact. All submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on the deadline date. Entries are limited to one submission per person.
