When I reply to people's inquieries as to where I go to school, the majority of the responses have to do with College of Charleston being a big party school or THE party school of SC loaded with drugs and STDs.

Ash

I guess the most common stereotype is that the college is predominately female. I don't think that it is entirely true, however, as an education major, it sure felt like it. Another stereotype is that the school is a majority of rich southerners.

Alex

Students party too much

Elana

They party a lot, attractive, rich

Annie

Laid-back, partiers, rich

Brittney

a lot of rich blonde girls

Harper

Stereotypes....Some say there's not enough guys. This is not true. Although the male to female ratio is rather low, there are plenty of guys on campus! Charleston....deep south....students aren't very diverse! This is NOT true! There is a huge diversity of students at C of C. People are very accepting and excited to learn from different ethnicities, cultures, and knowledge bases.

Becky

A lot of the stereotypes about C of C come from the fact that Charleston is an old southern city, so many people assume it would be a very conservative southern school. Everyone also thinks that all of the students are white, in a sorority or fraternity, and wear giant pearls and polos.

Cameron

A lot of people think that CofC is a party school

Scarlett

Superficially speaking, many of the female students are very snobby and pretentious. CofC is a party school.

Jerry

The classes are really cahllenging and difficult and that everyone stresses out around exam times.

Andy

Preppy southern girls and guys. the Campus is very stuck-up and has a lot of money.

Kayla

Most people think of CofC as a big party school with a lot of rich kids from up North and a whole lot of Daddy's girls.

Wes

Since C of C is not a very big, well-recognized school (but growing), some people may think that C of C students do not receive the same level of education as students attending bigger, more well-known universities(Clemson, UF, USC) do.

Jaimie

Weird, Gothic, STD school, Party SChool, Surfers, "LIBRAL"- the types of people

Sarah

Before I came to CofC, I really only thought of it as a party school. I went to high school nearby, and most of my classmates had the idea that our students weren't academically competative (I had one person tell me that if he came to CofC, he'd be the smartest person here). Because we're in Charleston, one of the most stereotypical Southern cities there is, a lot of people might have the idea that the school is also like that.

Sarah

rich, preppy frat stars that just hang out at the beach and drink

Margaret

Some stereotypes about CofC is that it is close to the beach and that CofC students are laid back.

Ross

Everyone is rich and preppy.

Ben

Party school, hippies, students have excessive amounts of money, beach bums, lacking in specific minorities, whiter than the Winter Olympics

Rory

Party school

Andrew

Preppy/Hippy Smart out of state kids, dumb SC public school kids Liberal Arts students/Business students

Kaitlin

Guys with boat shoes, khaki shorts who always have on a collared shirt or fraternity tshirt. Girls in lily pulizter, polos or vineyard vines with their jack rogers on their feet & pearls on their neck. Kids from wealthy new england and east coast prep schools.

Kelly

Either hippie or Sperry-wearing-bright-colors-and-pearls-preppies

Amanda

Preppy students, when actually most people are pretty laid back.

Bobby

C of C has a few groups that i have seen. there is the "carolina casual" bunch, you know, the guys who wear the way too short khakis with polos tucked in, fabric belts with the state flag, and sperrys. then there are the hippies who run around sometimes not wearing shoes and definately fit the "granola" profile. then there are the usual sorority guys and girls, who are pretty cool despite the negative dish on them. then there are the nerdy kids, usually foriegn but they are smart. finally, the average joes, the normal school populace who simply enjoy a good beer here and there, make decent grades and can be found chilling at the local resturants, coffee shops, and beach...living the charleston chill.

Ashton

it's diverse and cultured

Justin

The depiction of CofC as a laid-back party school is the most significant stereotype about the university. The students tend to be characterized as 'pigs' or 'sluts' from the greek scene, or hippies. The contrast between more privileged out-of-state students and 'poor' in-state students is also commonly mentioned on-campus. The school is also recognized as consisting of a largely homogeneous 'average middle class Caucasian' population, which lacks both racial and cultural diversity.

Andrea

That the female to male ratio is 7 to 1.

William

People think it's a really southern school with a good party and bar scene. The academics are good, and the girls are gorgeous.

Shannon

That we are all a bunch of drunks. That everyone is rich and doesn't care about anyone but themselves. The girls are all in a sorority, carry a Louis Vitton bag and wear big Chanel sunglasses. The guys all wear popped collared polos and are drunk and in a fraternity

Blake

They are either "fratty" or "punkish" and that the College has heavy drug use

Rory

I have heard that C of C is a party college.

Tia

greek kids - blonde/brunette girls who wear pearls, frat boys who wear sperrys and khaki shorts, get drunk every Thursday to Monday, speak only to other greek kids, parents are loaded and pay for all...really annoying people if you aren't into that lifestyle party school - supposedly we party hard enough to get this rep

Kelly

The students drink a lot There are only preppy kids "Cookie cutter girls" The students smoke cigarretes Beach bums High ratio of girls to guys

Erica

1.There are some people who say, "If the College of Charleston students were more laid back they'd fall over." 2.Looking around the campus you will also see an incredible amount of women, many of whom will have the "Charleston look" of pearls, polo shirts, skirts, rainbow flip-flops, and a vera bradley bag. You will also see the typical Charleston guy wearing polo shirts, khaki shorts, boat shoes, and sunglasses with the strap to keep them from falling off. 3.In comparison to the military college (The Citadel) and the medical school (MUSC) just down the street the CofC student may appear to be 'lazy' or 'hippy' or 'slack' or just sliding through college.

sam

Brett

Snobby, smart, artsy, laid back, like to party
