Quinnipiac University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Casey

There is not a lot of diversity here at QU but people see that and I think that is why they decide to come here. Kids wear whatever they want to class. Most students are from Washington and north. Students here have no idea about the presidential election. I do only because i watch the news almost every day.

to be completely honest, i'm sick of hearing about diversity problems on campus. it doesnt matter to me who i am going to school with as long as there are people to meet. i dont think anyone would feel out of place at quinnipiac because people choose the college that fits the best for them so if they felt out of place they wouldn't go here most students wear jeans or sweats to class yes, different types of students interact table 1 - sorority/fraternity members. table 2 - group of female roommates. table 3 - study group. table 4 - male roommates most quinnipiac students are from new york, new jersey, or new england upper middle class families students are politically apathetic i dont know what the next question means students rarely talk about how much they'll earn one day

Jess

I think most of the kids here are upperclass white kids. I personally am from the middleclass and have to work for things unlike most of the other students here.

1. Quinnipiac is straight out of the richest, whitest, most conventional town ever. 2. Anyone who is not white would probably feel out of place. 3. Most students one of the two extremes: pajamas or really expensive designer clothing. 4. There really aren't "different types of students". Everyone pretty much interacts with everyone because there is not a whole lot of diversity, even though Quinnipiac strives to promote diversity. 5. Table 1: Sports Team Table 2: Greek Life Table 3: Roommates Table 4: The awkward roommates 6. Most Quinnipiac students are from New York, New Jersey and Eastern Massachusetts. 7. Almost everyone on campus comes from a very wealthy family. 8. Students really aren't politically active because Quinnipiac has to remain neutral due to their nationally known polling institute. 9. I wouldn't know. 10. Not really.

I have had no problems with racial anything at QU. I think that because they have soo publicized the racial slurs this semester that is what made them even bigger. some people are obnoxious and want the attention, so they knew QU would throw it all over the place and they knew they would never get caught. I am not saying ignore it, but it is a private matter between the victim and they school, it should stay that way. I dont think any students need to feel out of place here, i think QU is very welcoming and makes everyone feel at home. There are 2 groups of students, the major preps/metros/fashionistas who take 2 hours to get ready and wear their uggs, north face, vera bradley, coach everything with make up galore, then you have the people who roll outta bed and come in their sweats and pjs. Most QU students are from the MA/NY/CT area. Students talk a lot abotu what they will earn one day, especially seniors (because they are applying for jobs now!)

Students at Quinnipiac are from one racial background. Freshman year I made friends with a girl who was African American and she transferred first semester because she didn't feel like there was enough diversity on campus. You can definitely see that this years Freshman class is a lot more diverse than last year. Quinnipiac is an expensive place to be, so most of the people here are from affluent families. Lots of kids do work study or have taken out student loans in order to help pay for school, while students don't have to do that.

I dont really have any experience with other groups on campus, however two of my friends do hold positions on SDB. I think that students who arent they typical Quinnipiac student may feel out of place. That means anyone who isnt white and Catholic/Christian/Protestant. 4 tables of students in the dining hall probably one table is a sports team eating their meal together, one is a group of freshmen girls gossiping about something that happened over the weekend, one is a group from either a fraternity or a sorority and one table is a group of RA's haveing bonding time. I dont think many Quinnipiac students are politically aware, i mean we were called the most apathetic school. No one cares about important issues. Yes, most students talk about how much they will earn one day, usually picking their major based on what type of job and salary they will be making.

When you glance around the cafeteria, the QUAD, the dorms and the classrooms one of the first things you might notice is that just about everybody owns a pair of Uggs and a Northface in just about every color (did you know that red Northfaces existed? Apparently they do.) On the outside most students look very similar and the occasional mohawk or wildly colored hair really stick out. It is in personality and interests that students really differ. I have met and made friends with people I might never have interacted with before coming to Quinnipiac. QU’s population is predominantly white and most students are not politically active. During the warmer months most girls do get relatively dressed up, but jeans and sweat pants are typical attire for students. QU is building up its international student population, and trying to branch out beyond the northeast coast, but most students live two to four hours away from campus or closer.

For the most part race, religion, sexual preference, etc. are not very much discussed on campus as a problem. There are organizations at Quinnipiac ranging from Hillel, for Jewish students, to Black Student Union, to QUIC, Quinnipiac University Irish Community, etc. Although these groups generally are joined by members of students who feel they can relate to the particular group, when an event is held, for example the AMICI’s annual Italian dinner, all students from all over the campus come. For the most part the students at Quinnipiac are wealthy however not all are. Many are here with student loans, financial aid, and scholarships. Students who would feel out place at Quinnipiac I would say are those who appear to be very “gothic” looking or are not sociable. For the most part students at Quinnipiac like to be involved, socialize and be well rounded. Most students wear sweats or jeans to class. Very rarely do students dress up to go class unless they have presentations or meetings to go to. Different types of students don’t usually interact but they also are not rude to each other. It is more of a feeling that students feel their way through freshman year and find their friends who will be their good friends for the next four years. Students in the dining hall are not usually very different from each other. In general friends sit with their friends and most people are open to new acquaintances, I have never felt uncomfortable sitting at a particular table. Most students at Quinnipiac come from wealthy backgrounds from MA, CT, NY, NJ. There are political clubs to join on campus but Quinnipiac students are known for not being very politically active. Those who are active are generally left or center. Students do talk about how much they would like to earn one day and most hope for $50,000 and up.

There aren't many racial, religous, etc.. groups on campus, but I have had some experiences with The Black Student Union on campus. I had to interview them for a story, and attended a meeting. They are all really nice people who come together for similar reasons: friendship, ideas on how to diversify QU, and how to spread awareness to students. An African American student might feel out of place. While the school has been trying vigorously to diversify, their is still a huge gap between whites and minorities at QU. I would estimate that only 10-12 percent of students are non-white. It has been getting more diverse of recent, however. Abercrombie and Fitch, North Face, Ugg Boots for girls... American Eagle, Hollister, etc... Yes. Students are from either New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Mass. That's the majority. The other states would be Penn., Maryland, New Hampshire, etc... RICH KIDS WITH BEEMERS!! There are many rich kids at QU, but there are also many middle and middle upper class as well. But im not really surprised considering how expensive it is to go here. Most students do not care about politics, and I would assume that some don't even know what the terms "left, right or center" even mean. I've heard some people speak about how they wan't to make a lot of money some day, and it's usually a large amount, but I don't blame them because coming to school here is a big investment.
