Virginia Tech is a great school. For anyone thinking about applying or attending, it's a great school with lots of opportunities to learn and grow as a person. Most people focus on academics and VT is not a huge party-school and if you put in the work, you can have a fun time in a great environment.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Virginia Tech is not a bad state university overall. The campus is very large, and one can easily get lost because of the lack of well-placed directional signs. However, besides this small flaw, Virginia Tech is a good university. Virginia Tech is very well known for its top-rate engineering programs, and the School of Engineering is very competitive. What probably struck me as the best thing about Virginia Tech was its motto: "Ut Prosim" (That I May Serve). It really speaks to the attitude of everyone on campus, as everyone I met was very nice.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Virginia Tech is an excellent academic university, especially in terms of engineering. It is located in the mountainous regions of Virginia which provide fresh air that cant be found in any city or suburb. There are plenty of outdoor activities that are completely safe such as, hiking, camping, canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, and many more. The breath taking view from hiking trails are indescribable and the constant view of the mountains from anywhere in Blacksburg is amazing.

From the moment I stepped on campus, I knew that I would attend this school. For years I have heard about Virginia Tech from my neighbors and family friends, but I was unaware of the imprint that it would have on me. The architecture is beyond amazing with their "Hokie Stone" specifically found in Virginia. The history and reputation of the school is amazing and keeps climbing as their academic programs continue to thrive each year. Not to mention that they have amazing athletics that all student are engulfed in. I am proud to say that I am going to be a Hokie.

Virginia Tech is an overall diverse, enriching community that allows students to get out of their comfort zone and dive into new opportunity. While it can seem intimidating at first since it is so vast, it has exposed myself and other students to experiences we might not otherwise receive. The academic side, especially the Animal Science program, is exceptional. They offer high-quality courses that have challenged me with lessons that far exceed the classroom.

I have loved Virginia Tech for many years now and i have finally visited this year. When I stepped onto the campus, I had the feeling that Virginia Tech is definitely a perfect fit for me. The whole institution, the academics, the athletics, and the extra-curricular activities, all screamed my name. However, that does not mean that there is nothing wrong at the school. There is a plethora of things that should be addressed and solved. But, I am willing to work with the institution to help solve those issues.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

The students here regularly mistake competitiveness for cruelty. As a transfer student, I haven't been able to make and maintain a single healthy relationship. Personally, I think this can be attributed to VT culture - maybe its just me? The athletics, football and basketball play a large role in student's lives, however, they fail to be an inclusive group. I tried many times to go out and meet people and was consistently turned away. The academic culture is strange and you will surely encounter a bias for international students (and with that egregious complaints from domestic students). Off-campus housing is limited and certain neighborhoods are frankly unfriendly. My experience at this university was poor and I am in the process of resigning and relocating to continue my academic career.

There is a plethora of opportunities at Tech to get involved in such as clubs, activities and especially the degree-oriented clubs! I joined the Hyperloop team which gives me hands on experience within my field and this coming fall I plan on joining a co-ed engineering fraternity to make more connections and get even more involved. Tech also hosts an event called "Engineering Expo" where hundreds of private sector companies visit annually to interview the engineering students for internship and co-op opportunities! The opportunities I have been presented with are endless and I am really just getting started as in fall of 2018 I will only be a sophomore! All of this opportunity to get involved and meet new people are great but what really makes Virginia Tech exceptional is the atmosphere. I'll tell a quick personal story from last fall when I had to miss multiple calculus classes due to my military obligation. I missed other classes as well, but this course impacted me tremendously because of the course load. The professor and I met late at night to review material that I missed! This was huge for me and showed that Tech holds a high standard for themselves and their students. They strive for greatness, their motto "Ut Prosim" which means "to serve" has inspired me and pushed me to hold myself to a higher standard which is why I love it here. The culture is profound, and the school is full of opportunities!

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Virginia Tech is a pretty good school. There has been a lot of controversy lately over spending decisions (expensive re-branding campaign, new logo, funds going towards athletics rather than academics, severe overcrowding of the dorms due to the acceptance of too many students), but there have been some major improvement projects coming to fruition, which have helped changed the look of education. Classroom spaces are being designed to encourage intellectual conversation between professors and students; the library has very few books left in it--the space is now geared toward giving students space to both collaborate and escape to quiet; they are currently working on replacing classroom furniture all over campus; there are labs for students to check out high-quality video equipment, use 3-D printers, build things, get tutoring and writing help--all included in tuition; a drone-testing facility was built this fall and a Hyperloop test track is supposed to be in the works. The school is also offering opportunities for student entrepreneurs to network with experts in their field, present their projects in "Shark Tank" style competitions, and take home huge cash prizes (one advertises $60k in available awards) to take definitive steps to "Invent the Future" as our old tagline read. I will be honest and say that I didn't like it here at first. I did not want to come to school here, and it was reinforced by my difficulty to fit in. But time goes on, you meet new people, and pretty soon, you find where you belong. I am pretty happy here now. Most importantly, Virginia Tech is what you make of it. If you want the classic college experience, you'll find it here. If you want to change the world, the resources are available to do just that.
