What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Caroline

I wish I had known how perfect this school would be for me.

Ellen

I wish I had known how to manage my time a little better before I came here. When I arrived, there were so many possibilities of things to do with my time, and they were all more interesting than reading for classes. When the semester came to a close, I had to work very hard to mantain a good GPA. If I had not lost sight of my time management and priorities, it would have been easier.

Jennifer

I never realized how much I would enjoy attending classes. I am in my 40's going back to school. If I had known how great it was, I would have started back much sooner.

Florence

As a non-traditional student, I work full-time and I drive over an hour to the campus for night classes. I wish I had known that the Electrical Engineering program does not offer many evening sessions. Andres

I wish i would of known how big the school was and also known that the population was huge

Tomiko

I wish I would have understood the pre-requirements for certain majors. As a transfer student from a community college I didn't take the correct courses to jump straight into my junior year at the University. While attending the community college I shuffled from elective to elective with no solid idea of what I wanted to major in. By the time I had choosen my major, I had finished all of my free electives at the community college. Now I am at the University having to take courses I was supposed to take at the Community College.

Kristy

Before I came to this school I wish I had known the layout of the campus. My second trip to the library ended up an hour and forty five minutes looking for my car once I was done studying with classmates. I got so turned around I passed the library 4 times and still could not figure out where I was going. I finally gave into pride and asked for assistance.

Sara

I wish I would have been aware of all of the different extracurricular activities UCF had to offer before I started going there. If I would have known that I was going to want to join two clubs, Honors Congress, and tryout for the Ultimate Frisbee Women's club team, I would have applied for more scholarships. I applied for a few, but only recieved two, and sadly I have to work in order to pay my bills. This means I can only participate in a couple extra curricular activities instead of all the ones I'd like to join.

Imani

I wish I had known that there are no free shuttles that will take you to the supermarket, so I really should have ahd a car or gotten to know the city's bus routes. I wish I had known that there were so many convienient shops on campus with some of the best items you can find without leaving campus. Also I wish I had known that there are two bookstores on campus for relaxation and text books.

Morgan

I wish I would have learned more about all the different types of clubs that UCF has to offer. I did not realize how many there were and it is hard to keep track of all the ones I would like to become an active member in. Especially, with scheduling times to go to each groups meetings because some over lap and it can be hard to manage. With prior knowledge I could figure out the clubs I have the most interest in then join those right away.

Valerie

How dependent you have to be on yourself.

Christopher

I wish I had known more about opportunities for both undergraduate research and internships prior to entering my field of study.

Jacquelyn

I think my college experience would be a lot different if I had come into the school knowing about all of the different clubs and sports and programs I can join. I did not know about them so I did not get involved as early. Honestly other then that I have loved everything about my school I feel it is the best choice I have ever made.

Nothing

Carly

I wish I would have known of all the opportunities at UCF. University of Central Florida has so many clubs and campus events it is hard to find out about all of them in your freshman year. I wish I would have known about these before I came to campus. There are over 100 clubs at UCF, there is something for everyone. There are volunteer opportunities, honors society, football games, knight-thon, leadership opportunities, sports clubs, and even a chocolate club!

Kevin

I wish that I had known just how huge of a change it would be going from high school to college. The differences are so vast that at first I wasn't sure I would be able to cope with it all. This university however, has many programs specifically for freshman to help them get involved and succeed so the transition seems a lot less overwhelming.

I wish I had known the value of trying to meet as many new people as possible. I think it is important to make an effort to introduce yourself to whoever you come in contact with. Jordan

College is not all parties and free time, its hard work, and a lot different. No matter how much you may think you want to get away and be on your own, it is a completly new experience and if you aren't careful or make the wrong choices, you can end up lonley and miserable rather than having the time of your life. Don't forget though that college is a time to find yourself though, so enjoy yourself and try new things.

Christopher

Before attending the University of Central Florida, I with I had known how large the campus truly is. Attempting to commute on foot from one end to the other is daunting and physically strenuous. I feel if I had prepared for that, I would have been able to prepare better to make it between classes with more time to spare. In the beginning I managed to arrive on time just catching the closing door and squeezing through before lectures began, but coming close to tardiness has never been taken lightly. It is important to always be on time.

jessica

i wish i would of known all of the stuff there is to do here because i spent the good first semester focused all on school when i could of been enjoying myself and concentrating on school all at the same time.

Emily

I wish I had known that parking and class size would be such an issue. At many times during the day, especially the early afternoon, I have to leave at least an hour early for class to get a parking space, and sometimes that isn't even enough. Classes fill up incredibly quickly, and you really shouldn't expect to receive too much personal attention from your professors (or even for them to learn your name in some cases).

Angie

I wish i would have had more information on their many scholarship, intership, and research programs, and their deadlines.

Lian

I wish i knew what major to pick for what I wanted to do In life so I would not had wasted time in classes I did not need.

Tello

I wish there was a class in school that helped me with the transition to college. Like understanding the financial aid application process, and how to do and keep a monthly budget. How to go from school classes to applying to interships and hopefully get a job once I graduate from school. Sometimes is hard to figure out who to call or write to for interships.

Matilda

Before I came to University of Central Florida, I wish I had known that I had to apply for the PTK Scholarship in order to get it. I was an active member of Phi Theta Kappa at my college, and my understanding was that you just show your membership card and you get the scholarship automatically.

Jonathan

Due to the large size of the school and the great number of useful facilities, I wish that prior to attending I had taken more time and had more resources to learn the layout of the school and location of various departments.

Nicholas

You need every penny that you can get, apply for all aid you can.

Don

I wish I had known more about the city and the location where the school is located.

sophia

That Disney World was no where near close!

Courtney

That there is not a whole lot of extra curricular activities or ways to get involved and meet people.

Ashley

I wish I had been a little more familiar with the program I was entering before I began my semester, in terms of academic credit limits per semester and online class offerings.

Luz

Before I began attending UCF, I wish I had known what major I truly wanted to study. UCF has many clubs events and other resources for many majors, but if you don't know what you want to major in then you can't really take advantage of those resources. Of course, they also have a career center where they help you narrow down career possibilites, but I would have saved myself money and time if I had known my major prior to attending UCF, and better able to use all of the resources available.

Courtney

I like it.

Kelly

Before I came to the University of Central Florida I wish I knew more about Greek life and how to get involoved with a sorority. It would have been a great oppurtunity to get involved with a sorority, but after attending the first couple weeks of the semester, I learned Rush to join a soroity had already taken place and it was too late to join.

Angela

I wish I had known how much living in an off-campus apartment was so expensive.

Kelly

I wish I had known to take more Dual Enrollment classes in high school. Taking them early saves a lot of money and allows you to get a head start on your major, giving you more time even to decide your major. Also I wish I had applied for more scholarships. The more the better. Scholarships are offered for specific majors and for general students. And don't forget to get involved. Get connected to clubs and organizations. This will help you meet people and have a more enjoyable experience as well as build your resume.

Chelsea

I wish someone had been able to make me comprehend the grand expense involved in college. My fairytale of higher education had it's bubble burst when I examined the price of just one book. My parents cannot fully support me but make barely over the minimum FAFSA qualification as a curse which many middle income families suffer from with their students in college. So in order to survive I must work twenty hours a week as well as be burdened by debt. This only hinders my potential in my field of interest.
