Delaware State University is among the country's top premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), serving diverse students. Delaware State University is known for its diverse programs and vibrant campus life. It has a strong sense of community and is particularly recognized for its research and scientific programs. This is the reason I decided to attend Delaware State University.

BANG BANG BANG!! The loud slamming startles you awake and when you collect your bearings you realize it's coming from above you. You're in an unfamiliar room with white brick walls and a window with drawn blinds. Getting up to lift the blinds, intending to see where you are, the mold around the windowsill makes you back away instead. You try the bright blue metal door instead, and it opens with a loud creek to a fluorescently lit hall, lined with identical doors on either side. A light flickers eerily at the end of the hall but you go on, passing a nearly dead cockroach twitching on its back. Two more blue doors tucked into a nook grab your attention, and instead you venture in there. It's a stuffy hot bathroom. Fruit flies swarm around the grey stalls on one side and around the showers on the other, the shower curtains are covered in brown streaks, and there's a rhythmic dripping sound. Hurrying out, disgusted, you continue down the hall and to the stairwell, passing another cockroach, alive this time. You make it to what looks like a lobby, and the floor is covered in dirt. Rushing out the nearest exit finally you've made it outside, but are still unsure of where you are until you read the nearby sign. It reads 'Delaware State University'. The horrific image I've just described to you are the living conditions at DSU, but the issues do not end there. When It comes to administration, I and just about everyone I've encountered on campus have complained about difficulties getting a hold of someone, extremely slow or no response when addressing complaints, strange chargers to their accounts, and more. The school recently received 16 health code violations concerning the food on campus, with reports of finding feathers and hair in the food. When speaking to one of the higher-ranking staff members of the school they told me that I should transfer and that in a meeting with the president of the school, he said all he cares about is "getting butts in seats". Many of the majors, mine especially, do not have the proper funding or attention and many of the students feel that their money is being wasted here. All of this only scratches the surface. There are some good opportunities at DSU, but they are overshadowed by the poor quality of this school. I will most certainly not be spending the next 4 years here.

I didn't even know about this school until I started working for the Freedom School. I met so many people who attended. The staff took our kids on a tour of the college, and I knew I had to go there. The Staff went to take pictures of their Sorority Plots and Fraternity Plots. These weren't just groups of people excluding each other. These sororities and Fraternities were connections, family, and community. This man that I worked with was about 60 years old and was so excited to see the plots from his college experience. It was even hard to keep the kids off the plots because they looked so appealing and exciting. Their family and friends were in these groups. This Greek life connected the students and the people in the community. This school is very impressive and very inclusive and I am very excited to start Fall of 2024.

The campus us modern, clean, and appears to be very safe. Class sizes are small and the campus highlights a lot of activities. There are lots of places to eat on and near campus. Ms Cox, in the aviation Department, is a wealth of knowledge, warm, and very respected by the aviation students.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I have learned countless lessons that I honestly feel that if I did not attend a higher institution of learning would have taken me years to learn and or experience. For instance I learned the true meaning of being independent. Like any other prospective college student this was what i was looking forward to the most being by myself with, no parental guidance and no one to dictate to me what it is I can and cannot do. However what I didn’t realize was that once I step on that campus I am officially on your own and I am now the dictator of my future that’s when it all becomes scary and surprisingly is when you will learn just what it is you want and need to do with your life. See while hear I was force to accept the fact that my parents could no longer hold my hand but, they could only assist from a far. However after about my first semester after all the tears were shed I knew how to do things on my own and I had a keen sense of who I was and destined to be.

I think the best and worst thing is that the school has so much history. This is good because you can experience the history. This is bad because there has not been much renovation to the buildings. I feel like the school may be small but it is the perfect size for me. I think the one thing I hate about the school is that admissions and student accounts give you such a hassle around the purge dates, they are never helpful.
