What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Visit the college during one of the college visit days that occur during the regular semester so you can be there and see how the campus is during the school day. You need to make sure that you feel comfortable at that university and what the university has to offer for education and after curricular activities. You need to check out the program and compare the program and the success rates with a degree from that school to make sure that the program being offer is outstanding because that is the reason you are going to college for a degree and you want to make sure that the program is accredited and a well known program. Make sure your student finds balance between school and social and become involved in the campus some how. Live on campus at least one year the experience is amazing and I feel that everyone should have the experience of living on campus. Life on campus is a totally different experience than living off campus. You only attend college once make it count!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

The importance of involvement within the university. I always heard become involved this and that organization looks great on a resume and all of that is true but becoming involved in the campus I feel makes you more a part and connected to the campus and the people. I am a social person so I went around and met other people but I spent more time working my first couple of years. Now I wish that I would of been active right away. Involvement is critical in connecting to the campus it develops you into a well rounded individual.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Those who do not like a smaller campus centered around the enivorment. UWRF is very environmentally conscious and the school strives on protecting and helping the environment. Another type of person who the campus would not be right for would be those that do not enjoy a close university. River Falls is a smaller campus and there are so many different events and organizations that allow the students to become close and involved in the university. If you are not social and do not want be actively involved then River Falls is not a good campus to attend.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

Generally pretty close, exurban community with a lot to offer for a smaller, cheaper 4-year college.

Do a lot of research before choosing a college to attend. Even if you don't know what your Major will be right away, choose a college based on the variety and availability of classes, as well as a good social atmosphere that you think you will fit into. Visit each campus you are considering and get a feel for each one, choose the one that most interests you personally. Don't choose a college to attend based on what others think, or if your friends are going there or not, etc. Make this choice for you and you only. It's generally pretty easy to transfer schools but it's easier to find the right school for you right off the bat.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

More about the different Majors/Minors offered at this school and what fields of work they applied to.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

In order to find the right college is to first look for the major that you are interested in. When you find the colleges that your major is or think your major may be, then look for the estimated price per semester that it may cost. I chose to go to River Falls mainly because it had my major that I really wanted and the cost was very reasonable. There is no reason that anybody has to pay such an extreme amount to go to a college. The only reason anyone pays so much is just because of the name of the college. I get the same education from River Falls as I would at Madison. When you find the school that you believe is right for you then look at all of opprotunities that the school offers. Whether it be groups, fraternities/sororities, or extra curricular activities, you must find the school that will keep you interested not just because of your major but because of the friendships that you will build by interacting with other students and socializing with everyone. Above all, it must be a college that you believe you can have fun and become an individual.

What's unique about your campus?

All of the fraternities and sororities and groups that you may join to become active and well known throughout the school.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Anyone is allowed to attend this school there is a group for any type of person.

Find something affordable for at least the first two years. THere is no sense wasting your money at the big name schools when you are just doing generals anyway.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Someone who is expecting a large campus life. This is a small family school. Most students go home on weekends, or stay there and party.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

There are not always enough class sections open to get into the prerequisites that you want.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Parents, help your kids pay for school. My dad refuses to even co-sign on a student loan and my financial aid loans don't even come close to covering my tuition. I have a part-time job but I have to support myself so I ended up turning to a loan company that turned out to be a little sleazy and it looks like I will probably be about $70,000 in debt by the time I graduate because my loans have such high interest rates. My tuition is only $6,000 a year. Constantly having to worry about finances and how I'm going to stay in school makes it hard to focus sometimes. If I had some help from either one of my parents, and I don't just mean money, it would make things a lot easier. Students, become involved with your school. Don't fall into a routine of sitting around or partying. Find things that you enjoy doing; maybe you could even help some people. Self-affirming activities will help you feel inspired to reach your full potential and to feel part of something bigger than yourself.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Not living on campus makes it hard to get involved with college life.

What's unique about your campus?

The close knit community. Everyone, on and off campus, is very polite and always willing to help you out. There is always someone to talk to, even if it is the first time you talked to this person. Everyone is watching the next persons back. It is crazy how friendly, polite and out-going some of the people at UWRF are.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The new student center becuase they tried to make it more efficient but in my opinion it was just anther building that wasn't needed.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Talk to graduates from that school or even students currently enrolled. Research the graduation rates as well as the transfer rates. Review course catalogs and compare with other schools to get the most diverse classes offered. Know yourself and what you want out of the university i.e. your goals and determine campus sizes as well as costs. Note if the school's housing is mainly on or off campus; because socializing will be impacted heavily by off a lot of campus housing and "suitcase colleges". Also research and make sure the school has any needed organizations. Lastly, check the location!!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

That the college was mostly filled with students more concerned with finances than socializing. And that the school truly was a "suitcase" college where students completely either left the campus or were busy with local jobs on weekends; so most socializing happened during the week instaed of achedimic prioreties.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Someone looking for a good "bang for your buck" type of school. More concerned with low finaces than socializing. Most students are from working class families and pay for college themselves and therefore; go home on the weekends to focus on work rather than school.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

University of Wisconsin River Falls in unique in many ways. There is always a place for student to go if they have questions about anything! the people here are really friendly and open to new things. Most of the professors are really nice and easy to approach. I have never had a problem asking for help. Alot of the students just do not ask. But i have become good friends with alot of the teachers and I know that I am in good hands when it comes to my career.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If i where to give any advice to parents and incoming students it would be to find a college that has alot of resources and staff that are avaliable for questions. I find UWRF to be a true example of a well organized and well staffed University. Students need to know that they are cared about, and are not just be used for their money. Having many advisors and staff available for answers and help with personal needs is exactly what should be offered to college students. Also for parents this should be very comforting because they are not there for thier children so it is nice to know that they are being taken care during a time of life shaping experiences. I am not afraid to be open minded and try new things when there is a well organized staff to support me. Students need to be sure that an educated staff will be there for them to help them find the way to reach there dreams and goals. The University of Wisconsin River Falls is a perfect example of that support for students.

What kind of person should attend this school?

I believe that this school is for everyone. There are all different types of students that attend this University. I have not really found any judgement issues or slanders against people. There are different activites for all different culutres; diversity days and other ethnic activites are a hudge hit at the University of Wisconsin of River Falls. I have fully enjoyed my experience at River Falls for the Two years i have been attending and i hope that i dont have to transfer to finish my degree. I am honored to be able to complete my degree at this University.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

Our wonderful elementary education background still plays a major roll in UW-River falls. Equally important is the quality and selection of Fine Arts courses and the Emphasis in our Argicultural teachings.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Make sure you know what you are looking for in a school and keep a list of the questions you know you want answered. Take a break. Take the responsibility onto yourself to get out and look into as many possible schools as you can. Take another break. Once the academic year hits, don't be afraid to meet new people. Make sure to act as strange as you normally do. There will be some who challenge your beliefs. Remember to stay humane while questioning their opinion and make sure you have evidence for your own. For sanities sake, take another break. Do your class work until you can explain it to someone without hesitating. Take a nap. Get involved with your school, if you don't like what there is to offer than start something new. College has one of the largest webs of potential opportunity per square foot there is. Take as much of it away with you as you can hold. Take another break. Remember to write things down including the date. Your friends will be important to stay sane, but how you juggle your free time will make the difference when tomorrow turns into yesterday.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

UW-Riverfalls contains a large majority of people dedicated to binge drinking and going home on the weekends.
