What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

There are three things I would tell parents/students who are trying to find the right schools; 1. Spy on the School for a couple of days. Look at the culture, check out their Financial Aid office to see how they handle people, go to the cafeteria and check out food selection and price, things of that nature. 2. Talk with some of the students of different levels and see how they feel about the school, even ask some of the people who work there and see how they feel about the school they work for. 3. Before you fall in love with a school make sure it has good job refence and that they will be able to help you get where you want,ex: you want to be a dentist and you want to attend UCA; but you cant because they don't offer that. Those three things will make sure you've chosen the right school and you will not be wasting your time there because it will get you where you wnt to go.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish that I had known how good some of the departments are like communication and business and how bad others are like family life education.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Some one who wants a true academics school like Duke or Harvard. This is a good school and you will get a good job, but it isn't very scholarly.

When deciding on a college, try not to let your money situation stop you. Choose the university that you feel you will grow and thrive the most at. If you are happy there, then you will be much more motivated to get involved and do well. Once you are attending that university, remember to relax. Getting overly stressed doesn't help situations at all. If you can just stay on task, then you will have no reason to stress out. College is the greatest time of your life, so remember to get involved on your campus. You'll want to be part of everything that is going on, and it will make your experience there so much greater!!

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I believe the worst thing about the University of Central Oklahoma is the size. It is very small, and I grew up in a large high school, so coming to college didn't seem too much different. If I could change this, I would make UCO a much larger school.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Finding the "right" college is always tricky. the best way to go about it is to find the place that have the most in common with yourself. Wether it be the amount of friends that are there or the types of academics the school offers or maybe sport...whatever. If the school interests you the most or sounds like a place you'd want to spend the next four to five years...then i think you found the place. And to make the most of the "college" experience, just do whatever you can and want. i doubt that if you do that than you will have no regrets.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

The University of Central Oklahoma is best known for the many different opportuinities it provides through different unique programs. Leadership, volunteering, Forensic Science, Education, Business, Art, Music, are just a few of the programs that UCO is well known for and stands apart from other universities. Leadership offers unique opportunities for students to get involved with leading in the community and on campus. The program has grown over the years and continues to grow.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Finding the right college to fit each student's personality, career goals, financial needs, and life experiences is the most important thing to do. Some students prefer bigger, smaller, close to home, or far away. The class size and student to teacher ratio is important for students to get the help they need in able to succeed. The opportunities available to students is also important. Opportunities such as volunteering, club involement, jobs, career focused activities should be looked at by parents and students when considering a college to attend. The college experience is a unique time in a student's life. Making the most of it does not mean dropping all resposibilities to have fun. College is a time to find out who you are as a person, find a balance between social life and school/work responsibilities, learn to stand independently as a person, and to grow from a teenager to an adult while achieving success at the same time. There are ups and downs through the college experience, but it is a starting point for the rest of a student's life. Through college, embrace the free time, fun, and being a student for the last time.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I honestly can not come up with the worst aspect of the University of Central Oklahoma. The facutly and staff provide great help for anything the students need. This is the best university for me and everything I need to get my degree and have a successfull career is provided to me by UCO.

I would say the best way to find the right college is to take tours of the campus that you are considering attending. while you are there try to meet with a professor and find out if they are very friendly and helpful. I would also do research on the schools reputation and visit with several students who attend the school. To make the most of your experience you have to be involve on campus and make new friends. You also need to focus on your classes and make good grades because the better your grades the more relaxed you will be through your college experience.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

It is a friendly enviroment the buildings are well placed and easily found. the students in classes seem to be friendly to just about everyone.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

I have a good friendship with many of the professors along with most of the students here do. I also have a great relationship with the President of the university. He is extremely caring about the students and success. This place of course wants you to succeed academically but they really want you to achieve in the world not by grades alone but by being a leader in something whether if it is in an organization or in a community.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Parents and students need to look for a school that they feel connected to. They need to know that their son or daughter is in great hands when they come to school at a university. Students should not go to a college or a university because their father or mother went there or because the athletic program is in the top ten in the nation at a particular sport. Students should not go to a school because it is the top school in the nation. Don't get me wrong, if someone goes to a school that is the best in the country then that is great but they need to look deeper than that. Students pay thousands of dollars for college. It is a huge investment. People just don't look at a house or a car and say I want it when they buy it. People date other people because they want to be sure that they have something that is perfect. Same thing goes for picking a college. It will impact you for the rest of your life so be wise in picking one and in experencing the college life.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

How welcoming it was to everyone from every kind of background. At this university, everyone has a chance to succeed. This place literally cares for you unlike most universities.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell anyone looking for the right college to imagine themselves there. Visit the campus and think, "Can I see myself being happy here?" Ask as many questions as possible and really get to know the campus. To make the most of your college experience, you really need to get involved. Dont just float by and make the grades. You need to be socially active so that you can not only get your degree, but enjoy the ride along the way. I am in a sorority on campus as well as over 5 clubs and/or groups. I thoroughly encourage getting involved on campus with anything and everything that you love doing!

What kind of person should not attend this school?

N/A. Everyone should attend UCO!

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

Its not too big and not too small. Its the perfect size.
