Home Away From Home

This university is home to the friendliest people around. The faculty and staff make it seem as though it is their pleasure to teach and assist you, rather than your honor to be there. I am so glad to have found my home away from home in UNCW. Go Seahawks!

UNCW From the Eyes of a Transfer

As someone who just transferred to UNCW from the biggest little city of Reno, Nevada, I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised. To begin, the campus is absolutely beautiful; gorgeous red brick buildings and lush greenery abound over six hundred acres, while calming water features add a feeling of zen that ties the campus together. Second, the teachers really seem to care that their students learn and understand the material; all of my teachers have let us know that they are available at our convenience, and that they are there to help us succeed. This came as a refreshing change from my previous university experience with professors who seemed to care very little about whether their students succeeded or not. Lastly, the campus feels very safe; it is equipped with emergency call boxes, campus escort services, as well as campus police. In conclusion; with a safe and beautiful environment, as well as dedicated teachers, UNCW seems like a great place to get an education.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

The one thing I wish someone would've told me about my freshman year is that most of the classes you will be taking are just general education classes. I really wish someone would've reiterated this to me, because I easily could've saved thousands of dollars by taking the same classes at my local community college. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed attending a four-year university for my first year of college, but now that it's over I realize I could've saved myself a ton of money. After just one year of taking out loans I'm already stressing about paying them back, and I still have about three years of schooling to go!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The most important piece of advice for myself as a high school senoir would be to loosen up. College life is not as scary and daunting as you might think. The only thing that can make the transition difficult is your attitude. An attitude that will accept change and moreover gravitate toward change will be needed in the long run. It most certainly will be a long run. With at least four years ahead of you, you better be ready to embrace some major shocks and difficult times, but this is not the time to worry about those things. Take life as it comes. Capture the moment as long as it is with you and when it passes, move on. Grow up. Face challenges head on and use them as opportunities to mature and learn. Never look back with regret. Only look forward with hope. Be safe and have fun.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about my school is the disparity of effort put forth by the professors. Some are very engaged and passionate about their teaching, but others do not share this same vitally. To say that some of the professors are boring would be an understatement. It is always a good thing to know the professor's personality before enrolling in a class.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is known for its Marine Biology, Education and Nursing schools. Our athletic teams like baseball and basketball are one of the best in the conference. Even if you are not on an althetic team, you can stay fit at our incredible student recreation center, which is one of the biggest facilities in the nation. UNCW is a very safe and friendly environment. And, of course, we can't forget the beach which is only 15 minutes away!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Minda, I know your senior year is going to be a breeze; however, you still need to focus and continue to work hard. Do not slack off or become lazy. College is going to hit you with a lot of work all at one time. So learn to manage your time wisely and learn a study techinque that works for you because believe me, there will be a lot of studying in your future. Classes will be increasingly hard than what you are used to, but do not worry, I know you are more than capable of handling it. Just focus, study hard, and remember that everything happens for a reason. Things wont always necessarily end up the way you planned, but just have faith in The Lord's plan and in the end, you realize what God's purpose was all along. GOOD LUCK! Love, Minda

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time and talk to myself in high school, I woud have so much to say. I would tell myself to make my college decsions based on what I want in my life, not based on my parents' wants. I would tell myself to go to a University college immidiatly, instead of going to a community college first and wasting three years. I would also tell my high school self that your grades in high school are so important and that coasting by with Bs is not living up to your potential and that you are capable of so much more. I would also tell myself that working 5 days every week in high school makes plenty of money, but it doesnt make any memories. I would tell myself to take a weekend off and spend time with the people that you will eventually lose contact with and not see until your class reunion. The most important thng I would tell myself is to have fun with friends, be kind to every single person at school and to work hard.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about UNCW is attending the extension site. The extension site students, including myself, often feel like we are forgotten by the university. We do not have access to many services unless we drive over an hour to the main campus. We do not feel included in the main campus activties and social life.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell myself not to worry so much about it. I had everything correct and ready to go for a smooth transition. I would tell myself to apply for more finnanical aid because taking out loans are just stressful. I would also tell myself that no, deciding a major did not get simpler but, it eventually comes to you. You know when you feel like youre doing the right thing.
