What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I would give future parents/students about finding the right college is make sure its somewhere the students really wants to go. Don't go somewhere just because your parents want you too or your best friends/boyfriend going. Choose your college wisely because your going to be the one thats going to be there for four years or more. Also thats the collge your going to have to write on your resume' in the future and you want to be proud of the choice you choose not the one your friend or parent choose for you.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

When I tell my friends about Kent State University I always brag about our Fashion Program. I brag about it because its my major, and also because were one of the top Fashion Schools in the Nation!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Before I came to Kent State University I wish I would have know about some of the programs they offer in the summer for incoming freshmen.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Explore all options when finding the right college. Going on college visits and getting a feel for the atmosphere will make it easier to find one that suits you best. Be sure to make sure they have plenty of options that tie in with your intended major, as well as looking into job placement after graduation.

VISIT the college you plan to attend, research what you want to major/ have a career in and make sure your school of choice has the program and credentials for the program in order for you to be happy there. So if the school is known for IT, you probably would not go there to major in fashion. Also, make sure if you pick a rural/city campus that you like that setting and are prepared to travel properly for that area and that you can afford to live as comfortably as you can. It is not fun to be stressed about money, and you probably still will be; however, save and be smart! Also, remember to have fun with this great experience! Good Luck!

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Typically, I would think that a student that enjoys a spacious campus with lots to do and enjoys a liberal view it would be perfect! However, I think all kinds of people can be happy here...it is what you make of it!!! :)

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Sometimes it seems communication can be an issue. From those advertising events to the staff and faculty. I feel it is very necessary as an individual to keep your peeled and and stay on top of everything!!! I guess as an adult, we should though! :)

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I would offer to parents and their children when trying to find the right college, is to feel that the college they chose will fulfill their child's ambition. Every adolecent has the idea that college is about having a social life and living on their own. Although those are minor details in a college experience, however parents want to make sure that the college offers a good education for the major of their choice, and that resources are available through that university. Such as, financial aid, tutoring, security, and extracurricular programs. Those are the most important factors in choosing a college.

What's unique about your campus?

The education is demanding, but rewarding at the same time. Why? Because it takes alot of hard work to get a successful grade.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I never intended to go to college because i wasn't confident in myself so my bestfriend applied for me & i was accepted. it wasnt until i attended college that i realized this is where i'm supposed to be but its a struggle because my family has no money; my advice to parents would be save from the time theyre babies. for student i would say take academics seriously because when it come to school, grades are like money. If i could do it all over again, i would research colleges and take weather, diversity, sororities/fraternities, and distance from my home all into consideration. also, appreciate your opportunity to even be in school becasue its a blessing so make the most out of it. education is just as much a priviledge as it is a right so put in to it what you want out of it.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

i concider the lack of diversity to be the worst thing about my school because im mexican and a long way from home so i feel like theres no one for me to identify with

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I have for parents is to help guide their children in helping them find the right school. Keeping in contact with your son/daughter is also important. Even though they're 18 and technically an "adult," I believe that frequent calls and letters will let them know that you're there for any problems they may be going through. It's important to keep an interest in their lives and show that you care. As far as advice for students, make sure that you're mentally prepared to go to school. High school was difficult for me and I just wanted to take a break, that's okay. Just make sure you want to go and that you're ready. Research different schools to find one that fits your interests and style. Once you start attending school, make friends with people who are serious about education. There are always people who want to party too much or who aren't too serious. Make it a personal goal to make friends with people who have a healthy lifestyle and love learning and life. You will surely flourish and succeed if you believe in yourself and try hard!

What kind of person should attend this school?

Someone who is serious about their education and is determined to complete their future goals in life. I had to wait a few years until I was ready to go to school so I am a few years older than a majority of the students but it isn't even an issue. Everyone here is excited to be at school and very helpful to each other. This school is for someone who is passionate about learning and the career field they want to enter.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst aspect of this school is the fact that I have to drive there everyday. It takes me about 45 minutes to get there since it's basically in the middle of nowhere. There really isn't anything else bad that I can say about this school except that I am a little confused about the campus transportation system so I've never tried riding the buses, but other people seem to find it easy.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to college selection. College is what you make it! Venture out of your comfort zone and make a lot of new friends and see how the other half lives. The most important thing to remember is to ALWAYS do your school work before going out with friends. College can be as easy as high school if you just make your work your first priority and stay on top of your assignments. Don't be a procrastinator! Be proactive and have fun! You can make college the best four years of your life if you just let loose and stay focused!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

When searching for the right college for you or your child, it is always important to research all of your options. See what schools would be the best financial value for your family, including schools that are known to give out a lot of financial aid and scholarships to students. It is also important that prospective students feel comfortable with a campus since they will be on it just about everyday for 4 years. It's good to know the kinds of social groups and events that make the campus stand out above others. If you are interested in sports, see what kind of recreational services are provided, what the school's sport records are and what inturmural sports are on campus. The same goes with music, arts, theater, politics, student media and any other sort of activity the student is interested in. Remember, college is just as good as you make it and deciding what college or university to attend is the first step in the process of making a better future for yourself or for your child.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

The campus feels like a community. Many of the residence halls include learning community based on majors and there are many on campus activities for students to participate in. There are a lot of programs and events during the week and on weekends for all students including free and cheap concerts, video game tournaments, billiards, cards, along with computer labs, open lounges for commuters and residents and even a bar in the basement of the student center. We have alot of different and healthy food choices on campus. We have support and help for students that are LGBT and disabled.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

You don't really brag about Kent, except for the cool black squirrels and we have a nice rec center and student events and programs.
